BIOGRAPHY
Yuri is a Mexican singer, presenter and actress, born on January 6, 1964, in Veracruz, Mexico. During her childhood, Yuri studied classical dance and won, in a competition at age 11, a scholarship to the Bolshoi Ballet of Russia, which she did not take advantage of because her parents prevented her from doing so. In compensation, her mother decided to promote her as a singer, studying in different spaces and joining a group of hers, in 1976, performing in various venues in Veracruz, where they performed covers of artists such as Michael Jackson and Janis Joplin. Given the local success and thanks to Yuri’s charisma and popularity, the group was renamed Yuri y La Manzana Eléctrica, a time in which she became friends with the popular singer Celia Cruz. During a presentation of the group, the art and repertoire director and arranger Julio Jaramillo Arenas, from the GAMMA record label, discovered the singer’s potential and proposed recording her first album. Her mother accepted the proposal, and from that moment she became her manager and they moved to Mexico City, starting a successful career in music, both in Mexico and internationally, particularly in Spain and Latin America.
