Seven inmates attacked Jayshawn Boyd at the Essex County jail in Newark, beating him unconscious by punching him in the face and stomping on his head, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said.  As a prison guard ran to get help, Byad Lockett and Darryl Watson struck Boyd in the head multiple times with a microwave, a beverage dispenser and a broom, Stephens said.

Watson also picked up a water cooler and a trash can and threw it at Boyd's head, Stephens said. Another inmate, Isaad Jackson, picked up a mop bucket full of water and threw it at his head and struck him in the head with a multi-gallon beverage dispenser, Stephens said.

Lockett and Watson were found guilty of numerous offenses, including first-degree attempted murder, second degree aggravated assault and third degree possession of a microwave for an unlawful purpose, Stephens said. Jackson was convicted of third degree attempted murder, while the jury was deadlocked on more severe charges for him, Stephen said.

Sentencing is scheduled for September, Stephens said. Watson is set to be sentenced on Tuesday, June 27 after being convicted of murder at a separate trial, Stephens said. Lockett is currently 12 years after being convicted of conspiracy to commit murder while Jackson has a pending homicide charge, Stephens said.
