Germán Genáro Cipriano Gómez Valdés Castillo, known simply as Germán Valdés “Tin Tan”, is a renowned and legendary Mexican actor, singer and comedian, born on September 19, 1915, in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. His father, who works in customs offices, traveled and changed residence frequently. After a period in Veracurz, the family moved to Ciudad Juárez, where Germán spent his early years and where he went to work at the local radio station XEJ, when he was 19 years old.
He began as a radio announcer in 1932, appearing in live programs with audiences, which would develop his comedic side and talent. In the program “El Barco de la Ilusión” he gave life to various characters over 10 years. He would begin to use the stage name “El Pachuco Topillo Tapas”.
During a broadcast, businessmen Paco Miller and Jorge Moulmer went to the studio where he was performing, in search of a talented comedian. There they discovered Germán and became fascinated with his comic style. They offered him a contract to be part of the cast that would begin the tour to travel throughout the Pacific and end in the Mexican capital. These businessmen decided that he should change his nickname to one that sounded better. Germán, remembering a Peruvian comedian, decided to take the stage name “Tin Tan.” With that name, the actor performed at the Aldama Theater in Guadalajara, with outstanding success. His presentation on the tour, as “Tin Tan y su Carnal Marcelo”, would mark the beginning of the legend.
After several tours, with full houses, Germán would debut in the cinema, in the film Summer Hotel (1944), and then launch a successful career, between the 40s and 50s, with productions such as With the music inside (1947). , Little Pumpkins (1949), The King of the Neighborhood (1950), Sinbad the Dizzy (1950), Cinderella (1952), The Tramp (1953), The Viscount of Monte Cristo (1954), The Barefoot Sultan (1956), School for mothers-in-law (1958), One Thousand and One Nights (1958), Tramp and Millionaire (1959), among several others.
He made more than 100 films, alongside great actors such as Fannie Kauffman Vitola, René Ruiz Tun Tun and Wolf Rubinski. Tin Tan died on June 29, 1973, at the age of 57, in Mexico City, due to liver cirrhosis and pancreatic cancer.
