Colt McCoy is a highly decorated former college football quarterback who played for the University of Texas at Austin before entering the National Football League (NFL). He currently plays for the Washington Redskins after lining up for the San Francisco 49ers (2013) and Cleveland Browns (2010–2012) who signed him in 2010 as the 85th overall pick.
The two-time Walter Camp Award winner, who was a finalist for the 2008 and 2009 Heisman Trophies, holds the record for most touchdown passes, yards and wins for his school and has since retired his No. 12 jersey.
Early education and life
Colt McCoy was born Daniel McCoy, the eldest of three children to Debra Kay and Steven Brad McCoy, on September 5, 1986 in Hobbs, New Mexico. He attended Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas, where he played football under his father, who was the school’s coach. This talented young man has been distinguished by his peers as he has been praised on several occasions, including his selection of the First team, composed of all the States. His high school career saw him complete 536 of 849 passes (63.1%) for 9,344 yards with 116 touchdowns.
After high school, McCoy enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin where he became a legend. His journey to legendary status didn’t start right away though, as he had a redshirt year as a freshman. He joined the team the following year and quickly established himself as the starting quarterback, becoming the first Texas quarterback to start and win a season opener in over 50 years. He completed a total of 217 of 318 passes for 2,570 yards with 29 touchdowns.
McCoy quickly became a media sensation in the 2007 season, appearing on magazine covers as well as national award watch lists for quarterback Maxwell, Manning and Davey O’Brien. At the end of the season, he won Offensive Most Valuable Player honors after completing 276 of 424 passes for 3,303 yards. In the 2008 season, he earned his first of two first-team All-American selections after completing 332 of 433 passes for 3,859 yards with 34 touchdowns.
In his final college season, Colt McCoy led his team to a perfect 12–0 regular season record and became the winningest quarterback in NCAA history with a total of 45 wins. He was later named to his second-team All-American First Team, after completing 332 of 470 passes for 3,521 yards with 27 touchdowns.

As a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, Colt McCoya signed a four-year contract worth $5 million and additionally received a signing bonus of $751,000. In 2013, after being traded to San Francisco, his salary was restructured from $1.5 million to $630,000. The following year, he signed a one-year, $795,000 contract with the Washington Redskins, which increased to $1.5 million in 2015.
In 2016, the quarterback signed a new three-year, $9 million contract giving him an average salary of $3 million a year. This contract was extended for a year in 2018, which allowed him to stay with the team until 2020.

Colt McCoy is married to former track and field running back for Baylor University, Rachel Glandorf McCoy. The couple met in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2008 while Rachel was working as an intern for Keye TV. She had interviewed the Longhorns star quarterback several times before McCoy decided to ask her out.
They got engaged on January 12, 2010, just after his team lost the 2010 BCS National Championship game. McCoy took his wife onto the field in the center of the stadium and showed her the jumbotron which displayed the question; “Rachel, I love you! Would you marry me? Colt. Rachel would have been absolutely ecstatic and said yes. The pair then exchanged vows in an extravagant ceremony a few months later on July 17, 2010, which included performances by singers Aaron Watson and Jordan Shipley. Colt McCoy has two brothers; Case McCoy and Chance McCoy, who played college football. Chance played as a wide receiver for Abilene Christian University, while Case, born February 12, 1990, played quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns football team, like his older brother. Upon graduation, Case held a position as a Tenant Broker Services Specialist with HPI Corporate Services in Austin, where he currently resides.
