Are newspapers published on New Year's Day?

Publish date: 2024-07-08

UK NEWSPAPERS are published almost every day of the year, but some daily papers won't be printed on New Year's Day this year.

Whether national or regional, it is up to the individual publication to publish their papers. So which publications will be publishing their papers on this News Years Day?

Are newspapers published on New Year's Day?

In England, newspapers are typically published every day of the year, except for Christmas Day.

This tradition has been upheld from as far back as 1912 when newspaper editors agreed not to produce a Christmas Day edition of the paper giving delivery drivers, newsagents and paperboys across the UK the day off.

Some publications went on to not publish on specific bank holidays, such as Good Friday and New Years Day, to give their staff a well-earned break.

However, this tradition was broken in 2010 when The Sun decided to run its first newspaper on Christmas Day, with the editor, Dominic Mohan saying at the time:

"Throughout The Sun’s 41-year history we have always respected the agreement among newspaper publishers in not publishing a Christmas Day edition of The Sun.

"However, this year we have seen dramatic innovations in the way that we deliver news to our readers and couldn’t resist the opportunity to break with tradition and produce this dazzling digital edition of the paper."

Since then, publications have continued to publish their papers regardless of the bank holidays, though some still like to uphold traditions.

Which newspapers will be published on New Year's Day?

Following The Sun's bold publication of its Christmas Day paper in 2010, most papers have been producing their content 365 days a year.

This means that regular readers should still be able to get their daily fix on January 1, 2022.

Here is the definitive list of which National Papers you'll be able to read this New Years Day:

Which newspapers are not publishing on New Year's Day?

Despite most newspapers publishing their New Year's papers on January 1, the occasional paper has decided to stick with tradition.

Most news publications will still be regularly reporting on the news via their online platforms, so readers should still be able to get their fix elsewhere.

These papers however will not be publishing a physical paper on New Years Day:
